At the ESFL Regional Conference held on Saturday, November 7th, at the Faculty of Political Science, participants had the opportunity to hear and question a series of topics in connection with liberal and libertarian ideas. Conference was opened by\u00a0Edward Stringham<\/a>\u00a0from Trinity College of Connecticut who talked about the replacement of state governance with a private one. After his exposition,\u00a0Vit Jedli\u010dka<\/a>, president of\u00a0Liberland<\/a>, microstate that was created in April this year between Serbia and Croatia, gave the participants insights into how Liberland came into existence, how it functions and what are future plans. “Liberland is the fastest growing nation in the world and I am here to develop good relations with Serbia, from where over 6.000 applications for Liberland citizenship came from”, said Jedlicka.<\/p>\n

Professor Krassen Stanchev from the\u00a0Institute for Free Markets<\/a>\u00a0from Sofia, held a lecture on gray economy and questioned the general idea that this phenomenon is per se something bad. “Gray economy may be bad, but lack of any kind of economic activity is even worse”, concluded Stanchev. Stanchev also took part in the constitutional assembly of Bulgaria in 1990-91, and participated in most of reform processes during this country’s transition.<\/p>\n

Participants also had the opportunity to hear\u00a0Vuk Guberinic<\/a>, founder of Serbia’s first ride-sharing company –\u00a0Car:Go<\/a>. Guberinic explained the way in which this application works, how it connects passengers and drivers and how it provides a more efficient and significantly more affordable transportation in Belgrade. “Our policy is to secure funds first, and then invest them into our business. Basically – everything in oppose to the government”, added Guberinic.<\/p>\n

After his exposition, conference participants could choose between two parallel lectures – Djordje Krivokapic from\u00a0Share Foundation<\/a>\u00a0spoke about privacy protection on the internet, while Joshua and Zack Harvy, who work with BitCoin ATM’s, talked about how this relatively new currency works and how come no central bank has control over it.<\/p>\n

This year’s conference was closed by\u00a0Yaron Brook<\/a>, director of the\u00a0Ayn Rand Institute<\/a>\u00a0from California. Brook spoke about the morality of entrepreneurship, fiercely defending the idea than business is highly moral as it means that someone is creating and using ideas, organizes the work process and satisfies peoples needs. “Workman came into existence as most capable among us, from most selfish need, offered wages to others. Capitalists have brought this class from poverty and misery. These people should be celebrated”, concluded Brook with cheers from the audience, which made the introduction for a heated debate on this topic.<\/p>\n
